Synopsis of Book

Stranded on another planet in a settlement that is slowly fading away after the mysterious deaths of all women, Todd Hewitt awaits his thirteenth birthday, when he will officially become a man and gain social status in Prentisstown. Todd is infected with Noise, the contagion that killed his mother and all the other women, and causes males to be bombarded day and night with the ceaseless sounds of each other's thoughts. Picking apples in the swamp one day with his dog Manchee, whose inane thoughts he can hear as well, Todd discovers a patch of Silence surrounding a teenage girl, the first he has ever seen. His discovery of Viola propels him into a violent adventure, where he flees the men of Prentisstown, bent on capturing him and making him the final man in their secret and chilling scheme. Along the way, he stumbles into truths that expose the lies he has been told, including the sprinkling of other populated settlements on the planet that have...women...and children...and Silence. The affection he unintentionally develops for Manchee and Viola, combined with the emotional devastation he encounters that culminates in the disturbing ending, make for a dark, yet poignant read.

Chaos Walking Trilogy Soon to Become a Movie Series

In October 2011, Lionsgate announced it has purchased the rights to the Chaos Walking series, and will be developing a series of films based on it. "A sense of urgency and momentum permeates these stories- it makes the books ones you can't put down, and will make the movies ones you can't miss on the big screen," said Drake of his decision to acquire the adaptation rights. "But apart from the story elements, the world in the stories is so vividly imagined. These are books, much like 'The Hunger Games,' that we feel truly beg to be brought to life on film."
