About the Author



Patrick Ness was born in 1971 on an army base in Virginia. his father was a drill sergeant for the US army. Shortly after his birth, Ness and his family relocated to Hawaii where he spent the first six years of his life. His family moved again in 1979 from Hawaii to the suburbs of Washington State. After high school, Ness Moved to Southern California where he attended the University of Southern California, graduating with a degree in English literature.

His first job after university was as a corporate writer for a cable company. He joked in an interview that anyone who had written a letter of complaint to their cable company had probably received one of his apology letters in return. 

Ness's first published story appeared in Genre magazine in 1997. While working on his first novel in 1999, he moved to London, England where he resides presently with a dual citizenship. he taught creative writing at Oxford University for three years and calls it his most serious job in an long list of odd jobs. 

Two adult titles, The Crash of Hennington and Topics About which I Know Nothing were published before his famous young adult series, Chaos Walking. The first book in the Chaos Walking series is The Knife of Never Letting Go (2008), followed by The Ask and the Answer (2009) and Monsters of Men (2010). Ness has won critical acclaim and a host of awards for his trilogy. 

Currently, Patrick Ness writes 1,000 words a day. He works as a book reviewer and lecturer. He recently sold the Chaos Walking Rights to Lions Gate Films and hopes his trilogy will make it to the big screen soon.
